Before getting started adding FaceTime to your MyTalk communication boards, please take a moment to fully understand how FaceTime works. After completing this article on FaceTime, we will get started building your FaceTime communication board.
Using MyTalk to launch FaceTime
Launching FaceTime uses our 'Launch other Apps' functionality. Please review as a starter to building your FaceTime pages.
Using 'Web image search' we found a picture to represent FaceTime, but notice the text we entered is Call.
Select the 'Call' Page
Note that you have a path (cell) for regular telephones and a cell for FaceTime. Remember that FaceTime can only be used with others who have a device with a facing camera. Learn about FaceTime at Apple
On the 'Call' page we we will use the App Link feature to enter the phone numbers of Family members. Notice the text 'Call' is included. There is learning with the distinction of call vs. FaceTime on the other page.
Use Text and Other Properties to set up each cell
Notice in the 'App Link' field, 4th from the top, that I have used the '>' at the right of the field to scroll to the Telephone app link launch command. This is just one of the suggestions you will see as you scroll through other app launch alternatives
Tap inside the App link dialogue box to set your cursor behind the last '0' (see above). Notice the format as you begin to delete the 0's and replace them with a phone number. Keep the dashes '-'. Now select 'Done'
Remember - a device must have the capacity to run the application. An iPad with only a data plan won't make a phone call. See the error message below. In our case Michael can make calls or FaceTime connections with his phone and FaceTime connections with his iPad.
Launching FaceTime is just as simple - Use the Back to the 'Call' Page
Now select the FaceTime Page
Swipe from View to Edit / Select a Cell / Then Select 'Text and Other Properties'
As you scroll through the App Link suggestions you will notice three different alternatives for FaceTime
Starting with phone number above. Notice the hint below the field. Your next alternative is use the Apple ID of the person you are reaching.
Finally, you can choose email address. After making your selection being careful to keep the formatting as it is in the hint, select Done.
Now, your End User simply selects that cell and Up pops Facetime. We like to know that Michael is home from school and inside the house.
This screenshot from my iPhone shows that he is at home and happy. Next I want him to FaceTime his mom. Build FaceTime and Phone call boards right in side of MyTalk.
