Free Text to Speech in User Mode
Question: I like your text to speech in author mode, but my user is high functioning and needs access to Text to Speech. But I don't want to give her access to 'author' mode.
Answer: You can do that, but you will need to set it up for your user.
The free Text to Speech that comes with Mobile and Mobile Lite requires internet access when using it. For iPod, or iPad without a cellular plan you will need to be in a wi-fi environment. If you have an iPhone or cellular enabled iPad, text to speech will work wherever you have cell coverage, but it will be a bit slower.
All other MyTalk content is resident on the phone, therefore no coverage of any sort is required, except the free Text to Speech. Now, how to do it:
1. Find the cell that you want to use for Text to Speech. In this example I'm using the board below the 'Help Me' cell. User selects 'Help me'
Once my user selects the 'Help Me' cell, up comes the Text To Speech page with just two icons, my 'To Home' Icon and the 'Text to Speech' image.
To set this up, you the MyTalk author, need to be in author mode on either the hand held unit or in Workspace. You will take two simple steps.
1. Find an image that will represent Text to Speech and place it in the cell. In the example above I just did a web search. Your text to speech cell must have an image. Look in the messages below to find a great TTS image donated by Shane.
2. In the text field enter a question mark "?" without the quotes. Look at the image above to see how it will look for your user. The combination of an appropriate TTS image, plus the ? will indicate this is the TTS cell.
Back in user mode, when you user selects this cell, up will pop the keyboard for them to type. See below.
After they type the phrase and hit OK, the phrase will be spoken by Emma. (The only voice available as free is Emma. To have access to sophisticated TTS in many languages and voices, purchase a language when you log in on the Mobile Device using the In App purchase process.)
After the phrase, you will return to the prior screen where your user can select 'Home' to reset to the beginning or select the tts cell to continue the conversation.
That's all there is to it.

April, you can use any image you want to represent the text-to-speech cell. Even this one that I just created.
