I am a speech pathologist who works with students with various disabilities ranging from moderate to severe. I have several students who because of their behavior or their level of communication were not appropriate for an expensive AAC device. It always seemed in the past that the students had to prove themselves capable of using a device before they could actually get one. This didn’t entirely make sense for some of my students who could take a couple years to learn how to use a device. But getting funding can be very difficult and some students who might “possibly” learn in the future, could not get access to a device. I thought for some of these students, if I could give them a low cost voice output communication device, then they could actually learn from the device. I have students who really need the voice output in order to learn or to attend to the symbols. One student can now participate in morning meeting because of MyTalk, but it took over a year of modeling and modifying the programming to get her to that point. Many of my students are behaving better, because with MyTalk, they can communicate that they want the blue blocks, rather than the black ones, or the shape puzzle rather than the ABC puzzle. Too many times we’re constantly guessing what they want, but with MyTalk, there’s no guessing, they can just tell us. Please add a comment about your ideas and suggestions about using MyTalk to help with behavior.
