We have now had 2 instances when clients working in school environment could not create user names. Creating a user name for the first time requires access to the internet, either through a wifi connection or 3GS cell connection. But both of these users had working internet connections.
After a lot of research a gentleman in the Information Services department figured it out. His post is below.
The latest version of IE for Windows XP is 8, which cannot use the new workspace.
Our network administrator was able to determine that the workspace uses Aviary's Feather API. Aviary.com is filtered as "security", meaning it could be used to get around web filtering of other sites. We have added a rule for teachers such that they can use websites like MyTalkTools that incorporate the Feather API.
The workspace should load correctly now. If not, it may be necessary to reboot the computer.
