Creating Content in Workspace
If you completed our tutorial ‘Workspace_Adding a Child board’ you should have a blank Drinks board like the image below.
Let’s add Content. There are two major ways to add content.
- If your libraries contain the content you want, simply drag and drop that content on to your boards in the Layout section.
- If you have access to content that is not yet in your libraries use the Customize (Gear Icon) at the top right of each cell. Notice above there is no Customize (Gear) icon at the top right. You must hover over the cell for your editing options to appear.
Notice below that the cursor is hovering over the top right cell. See the editing options.
Choose the gear option at the top right of the cell:
Notice that you can select content from a file, anywhere on your computer or attached drives. In the example below we are selecting a image file from our computer.
With the file showing, drag it into the ‘Select Files’ portion of the ‘Get a Picture file’ dialogue box.
Your image now appears in that cell.
Use the same process for adding video or sound files.
If you want to record a sound file, it’s best to have a microphone attached to your computer, but you computer’s build in microphone will work.
When you select ‘Record Sound’ a microphone will appear.
Press the record button, record the contents of your cell then press the stop button. The stop button appears when you start to record or when you start to play.
Only appropriate buttons will appear. After Recording, we selected the save icon above and that moved the new sound file into our private library. Open your private library, select the ‘sound’ filter, then drag that file onto your cell. See below.
Notice in the image above that after we drag the sound file onto the cell, the ‘speaker’ image appears.
Use ‘Drag from Library’ feature to add content to your cells. Below we found a milk image in the symbolstix library. Notice we selected the sound and image filters, searched using ‘drink’ and found milk, then dragged milk to the top left cell.
Drag and Drop:
Expand the ‘submissions’ library or the ‘symbolstix’ library. Click on filters. In those 2 libraries, you should find much of the image content and cell content needed to build your boards. The symbolstix library contains images. The submissions library contains images and sample boards. We suggest starting out with the submissions library. The example below is filtered for ‘cells’ only with the search criteria = child. There you find content donated by Speech Language Pathologists, Special Education teachers, Occupational and Physical Therapists for you to use. Drag and drop that content on to your cells.
Below we dragged ‘about me’ on to our Drinks board just to illustrate how simple drag and drop is to use.
Experiment with all the content options in Workspace to find what you like the most. Below we have highlighted adding text, but try it all!
Remember you can also edit in Mobile.
